Pretoria’s pace

A quieter city suits a careful start

The Gauteng Tourism Authority puts the difference between Pretoria and Joburg in one line.

Where Johannesburg is sassy, sexy and fast, Pretoria tends to be more sedate and conventional.

That line comes from the Authority’s page on Hatfield. Wikipedia adds that Pretoria is home to the headquarters of every national government department and to 134 foreign embassies and high commissions. If your work puts you near that world, you may have good reason to keep your private life private, and three habits help.

  1. Choose a username that tells people nothing

Other members see a username, never your real name or email. Leave out your workplace, your street and your other accounts.

  2. Let the site keep your location vague

Only your nearest town or city shows on your profile, so Pretoria or Centurion is as exact as anyone gets. Keep your address out of your messages too.

  3. Choose a calm place for the first meeting

Pick somewhere public in daylight, with your own way home. The first date ideas guide and the places below are a good start.

Where to meet

Calm places to start, from Hatfield to Arcadia

Pick daylight and a busy spot, with a roof in case of a storm: South African Tourism says thunder and lightning storms are common in Gauteng. Suggest the place yourself and offer two options. Someone who respects “I would rather start somewhere calm” is already showing you how they treat a limit. Opening hours change, so check them before you fix a time.

  • Hatfield

The Gauteng Tourism Authority calls it Pretoria’s hippest and most lively suburb, home to the University of Pretoria, founded in 1908. Duncan Yard is a shopping yard of boutiques, galleries and restaurants, and the Authority’s solo-travel guide says the precinct has a good density of daytime dining options. Go by day: the nightlife is described as buzzing.

  • Arcadia

The solo-travel guide lists the Union Buildings, Freedom Park and the Pretoria Art Museum in Arcadia. Wikipedia associates Arcadia with historical buildings, embassies and hotels, and puts the Union Buildings at its northern end. A museum visit gives you something to talk about.

  • Menlyn

Wikipedia places the Menlyn Park Shopping Centre and Menlyn Maine Central Square in this affluent suburb. A big centre keeps you among other people, but look up its trading hours first.

Getting around

Check the last train before you say yes

The Gautrain links Hatfield, Pretoria Central and Centurion with Johannesburg, and Wikipedia says the ride from Pretoria station to Johannesburg’s Park Station takes 35 minutes. Its own site says services run daily between 05h30 and 20h30, so a Johannesburg member visiting in the evening needs a lift home. Meet near the Hatfield station in the afternoon and a visitor has time to catch the last train.

After dark, do not walk to or from a station. The UK government’s travel advice describes the Gautrain as generally safer and more reliable, and gives this warning all the same. The Gautrain’s own site lists CCTV on trains and in stations and a 24-hour security presence at every station. Check both again before you travel, as hours and advice change.

Pretoria questions

Is there BDSM and kinky dating in Pretoria?

Yes. Members in Pretoria and Centurion are counted together on Kinky Singles South Africa, and together they are the third busiest city on the site. Choose tags such as Dom, Sub, Switch or Bondage & Discipline, then browse profiles and daily match suggestions at your own pace.

How private is my profile?

Other members never see your real name or email, and your profile shows only your nearest town or city, not your street. You can block anyone instantly and report problems, and the site warns you if someone tries to move the chat to an app such as WhatsApp. The safety page lists the rest.

Where should I meet someone in Pretoria for the first time?

Somewhere public, in daylight, with your own way home. The Gauteng Tourism Authority points to daytime dining around the Hatfield station and the University of Pretoria. Tell a friend where you are and when you will check in.

Can I meet someone who lives in Johannesburg?

Yes. The Gautrain links Hatfield, Pretoria Central and Centurion with Johannesburg, but its own site says services run only between 05h30 and 20h30, so settle the trip home before you commit. The Johannesburg page has the meeting places the Gauteng Tourism Authority suggests there.
